William B. Lipton

When William Lipton was in the ninth grade, he was introduced to the law by the novel Clarence Darrow for the Defense. He became determined to become a lawyer. William earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Wayne State University while working at many jobs and keeping his goal in sight. While teaching high school in Detroit, the government drafted William into the U.S. Army. After finishing his tour, he earned his Juris Doctor from the Detroit College of Law. In 1964, William struck out on his own, fulfilling his lifelong dreams to work for himself while representing people under the most trying circumstances. William’s life experience formed his personal character his legal principles. He is a son of immigrants who could not speak English when they arrived in America, who succeeded by working several jobs while putting himself through school and serving his country during the Korean War. A great believer in Jeffersonian democracy, William jealously guarded each person’s right to live his own life, free from harm or interference from others. When the rash or unsafe practices of individuals or corporations interfered with a person’s ability to live a healthy and fulfilling life, William stood with those who needed help to help themselves, pledging to restore dignity to the injured and their families. Since 1964, Lipton Law has been a continuous and respected presence in the Detroit legal community, dedicated to the ideals around which William organized his life and his firm. His principles were the foundation of Lipton Law, they are the principles that guide us today and they will be the principles that move us forward into the future.
