Our Michigan personal injury lawyers honor referral fees for every case we accept, and we don’t make referring attorneys chase us down to confirm the fee. As soon as we’re retained by your client, we document the referral relationship and the fee arrangement in writing, consistent with Michigan’s ethics rules governing fee-splitting between lawyers.
Under MRPC 1.5(e), Michigan does not require a referring attorney to actively work on the case to earn a referral fee: only that the client is advised of the arrangement, does not object, and that the total fee charged remains reasonable. We build this disclosure and consent into our standard retainer agreement so there’s no ambiguity later about who is owed what.
We also track every referral internally from the moment the file comes in, so there’s never a question about who sent us the case, even if your client calls our office directly. If that happens, simply make sure your client mentions your name as the referring attorney, and we’ll take it from there.
